The Dagoman story of a dreamtime serpent
The Gorrondolmi Project has been created to tell the undocumented Dagoman Story about the Blue Serpent who lives under Katherine town in the Northern Territory.
The Dagoman people are the recognised traditional people who lived directly around and in the town of Katherine in the Northern Territory- rather than the Jawoyn people who lived up river and the Wardaman who lived down river.
Gorrondolmi, the Blue Serpent, inhabits the water systems and underground aquifers in and around Katherine. From the limestone caves known as Cutta Cutta caves, about 30 kilometres southeast of the town, along the Katherine River running right through the town, to pools of water like those at Edith Falls, 30 kilometres northeast of Katherine.
Although the story varies from location to location, the Blue Serpent features in the Dreaming stories of many Aboriginal people and is always associated with watercourses, such as billabongs, rivers, creeks and lagoons.
